Down by the lake
It took AOL 9 years to reach one million users. It took Facebook 9 months to reach one million users. It took Draw Something 9 days to reach one million users.

I find it interesting that the scope of each of these platforms is getting much smaller. AOL was a massive entity that provided dial-up and acted as a portal to the internet. Facebook is just a social network and Draw Something is just an app that runs on Facebook.
As the internet becomes increasingly widespread, we are going to see more smaller services get extremely popular. The real question is, what about the AOLs, Googles, and Facebooks? Now that just small apps are getting so popular, how large are they going to get and what will be the next large platform that comes along.
Even though apps like Draw Something have an incredible amount of users, we must remember they are just an app. In this case (and in many, many more) this app just plugs into Facebook. What, if anything can, will replace the underlying platform Facebook?
That company is going to define the next age of the web. First was information (search engines like Google), then came social with Facebook, what will be next?
